Board Approval: New Independent Practice Standards Now Available

last updated: January 15, 2026

The Board of Directors has approved a new Practice Standard for Nurses in Independent Practice.

This standard applies to Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) who operate an independent or self-employed nursing practice in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Independent nursing practice offers greater autonomy, but it also comes with additional professional, legal, and regulatory responsibilities. The new standard outlines CANNN’s expectations to support safe, ethical, and competent practice, while protecting the public.

The Practice Standard for Nurses in Independent Practice addresses key areas including:

  • Scope of practice and competence
  • Professional accountability
  • Informed consent and confidentiality
  • Documentation and record-keeping
  • Fees for service and advertising
  • Risk management and professional liability

Nurses who are currently practising independently, or considering independent practice, are encouraged to review this standard carefully.

The approved Practice Standard for Nurses in Independent Practice can be found under the Practice Standards tab on the website.
