2027 Registration Year
Registration Renewal
Renewal opens October 15 and closes December 15. There is one new step this year. You register for professional liability protection with CNPS before you renew.
Key Dates
September 8
MyCNPS opens. Register any time from this date. We suggest you do it early.
October 15
Renewal opens.
December 15
Renewal closes at 11:59 p.m. MT. A $100 late fee applies after this date.
January 1
Renewal is closed. You would need to apply for reinstatement to return to practice.
New This Year
Register for your professional liability protection with CNPS
In past years, the College sent your information to the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS) for you. This year you register with CNPS yourself, at the MyCNPS portal, before you renew.
Your fee does not change. The CNPS amount is part of the renewal fee you pay the College at the end of your renewal. We then forward it to CNPS for you. There is no extra cost.
MyCNPS will show your fee as $0. That is expected. It shows $0 because you pay the College, not CNPS.
1
Create your MyCNPS account
Go to my.cnps.ca. Create or activate your account.
You can do this any time from September 8. Do it before renewal opens if you can.
Use the email address on your College registration. Your details and your protection history will already be there.
2
Register for CNPS Professional Liability Protection and other Core Services
Check that your registration number matches the one on your registrant portal profile.
Choose a period of protection that covers January 1 to December 31, 2027. You may be offered 2026, 2027, or both. Your renewal depends on 2027.
If you hold more than one designation, register for each one. Nurse practitioners are the exception. Registering as an NP also covers your RN registration.
Supplementary Protection is a separate optional service. You do not need it to renew.
3
Renewal With the College
From October 15, sign in to your registrant portal and renew as usual.
The protection step comes after your professional development plan, on the same page as your declarations. You will see a Verify with CNPS button. Select it.
The College checks with CNPS and confirms your protection straight away. This is a step you complete. It does not happen on its own.
Two things will pause your renewal
A registration number that does not match. Copy it from your registrant portal rather than typing it from memory.
Protection registered for the wrong designation. Protection registered as an LPN will not confirm an RN renewal. The reverse is also true. Nurse practitioners are the exception. Registering as an NP is enough for your RN registration, and you are not charged twice.
If either happens, your renewal pauses at that step. Everything you have already done is saved.
CNPS holds the registration record and is the only one who can change it. Call CNPS at 1-800-267-3390 or email registration@cnps.ca. Sort it out early. The December 15 deadline still applies.
Your email address will not stop you. If you use a different one, CNPS creates a second account, spots it, and contacts you afterwards to merge them. Your renewal still goes through. Where you have a choice, use a personal address rather than a work one, because work addresses change when you change employers.

What you will see
Before you verify
The section is headed CNPS Professional Liability Protection (PLP).
It asks you to register at my.cnps.ca before you continue, using the same registration number that appears on your College profile.
You cannot submit your renewal until your protection is verified.
When It Verifies
Your protection is confirmed for 2027.
Nothing further is needed. You continue to payment.
When It does not
You will see that the College could not confirm your registration with CNPS.
Your renewal is saved. Your other answers are kept.
Contact CNPS, then come back and select Verify with CNPS again.

SUPPORTING INFORMATION
Your professional development plan
Your professional development plan is part of the College’s Quality Assurance Program. You complete one each year as part of your renewal.
The plan looks back as well as forward. You reflect on your practice over the year, set two goals, and record two learning activities for each goal. You can add learning activities at any point during the year. Doing it as you go makes renewal much shorter than doing it all in December.
If the College is your host jurisdiction, you complete your quality assurance requirements in your home jurisdiction. We recognize them. This includes virtual care registrants, who hold host licences.
Full guidance, including how to build a plan that meets expectations, is on the Quality Assurance Program pages.
During Renewal
If something is not working
My protection is not confirming
There are two usual causes. Your registration number does not match the one we hold, or your protection is registered for a different designation than the one you are renewing.
CNPS holds the record and is the only one who can correct it. Call 1-800-267-3390 or email registration@cnps.ca as soon as it happens.
I am not being asked to pay
Either your renewal is under review by the registration team, or your fee is covered under a separate arrangement.
Either way, we will be in touch.
I cannot sign in
Use the email address on file with the College. Select Forgot Password to reset it. If your work email address has changed, contact us.
Check that you are using Google Chrome on a computer, not a phone or tablet.

Questions and answers
THE NEW STEP
What is new for CNNN registration this year?
This year you register for CNPS Professional Liability Protection (PLP) and other Core Services directly with the Canadian Nurses Protective Society, at the MyCNPS portal. Previously the College sent your information to CNPS for you.
Only the process has changed. The fee is the same, you still pay the College, and the College still sends the CNPS fee to CNPS for you.
Why is professional liability protection required?
Following the College direction, professional liability protection continues to be a requirement of practice for registrants, and CNPS PLP meets that requirement.
What is professional liability protection?
It provides financial compensation for members of the public harmed as a result of malpractice or negligence by a health professional.
If a court found that a patient was injured because nursing care fell below accepted standards, it could require the nurse to compensate that patient. A protection provider would normally meet the cost of legal representation and pay the compensation ordered.
This protects the public, because a source of compensation is available. It also protects the nurse, who has legal representation and does not personally bear the full cost.
CNPS has been the College’s protection provider for many years. It is a discretionary legal support system created by nurses, for nurses, and provides one of the broadest scopes of professional liability protection available.
How do I register?
Step 1. Go to my.cnps.ca and create your MyCNPS account, using the same email address the College has on file for you.
Step 2. Register for CNPS PLP and other Core Services, following the steps in the portal.
Step 3. Complete your renewal in Alinity. After the professional development plan section you reach a page with the declaration questions and the protection step. Select Verify with CNPS before you go on to payment.
We recommend registering with CNPS before you start your renewal.
When can I create my MyCNPS account?
The MyCNPS portal opens on September 8, 2026. You can create your account any time after that. You do not need to wait for renewal to open on October 15, and we recommend not waiting.
REGISTERING WITH CNPS
What registration number do I enter?
Your CNNN registration number, exactly as it appears in your Alinity profile.
This is the most important detail to get right. CNPS confirms your registration by number. If the number at MyCNPS does not match the one the College holds, your protection cannot be confirmed and your renewal pauses until it is corrected.
I hold more than one designation. Do I register more than once?
Yes. Protection is registered against a designation, not only against a registration number. Register separately for each designation you hold.
Protection registered as a Licensed Practical Nurse will not confirm a renewal as a Registered Nurse, and the reverse is also true. If you register for one of two designations, one renewal goes through and the other pauses.
Nurse practitioners are the exception. Registering as a nurse practitioner is enough for both your NP and your RN registration, and you are not charged twice.
Which protection period should I select?
Select a period covering January 1 to December 31, 2027. That is the period your renewal checks for.
MyCNPS may also offer you 2026. That option is there for nurses new to practice who need protection for the rest of this year. If you register for 2026 only, your renewal will pause until 2027 protection is confirmed.
What email address should I use?
Use the same email address the College has on file for you. Your details and your protection history will already be in the system, and several fields will be filled in for you.
If you use a different address, CNPS creates a second account. CNPS checks for this and will contact you afterwards to merge them. It will not stop you registering or completing your renewal.
Where you have a choice, a personal address is more reliable than a work one, because work addresses change when you change employers.
Do I need Supplementary Protection to renew?
No. Supplementary Protection is an optional, additional CNPS service. It gives nurses an accessible source of legal assistance with complaints to their nursing regulator, and generally provides assistance with the investigation of a complaint and up to $50,000 for legal representation if a matter is referred to a disciplinary hearing.
If you choose it, you pay CNPS directly and at your own cost. It is not part of the fee the College collects or forwards for you, and it is not part of any reimbursement arrangement. One registration covers all the designations you hold. It runs on a calendar year cycle and renews automatically. Details and eligibility conditions are at cnps.ca/supp.
ABOUT THE FEE
Why does MyCNPS show my fee as $0?
Because the CNPS fee is part of your College renewal fee. You pay it to the College as part of your renewal, and the College forwards it to CNPS for you, as in previous years. There is no additional cost and nothing further to pay at MyCNPS.
I claim reimbursement for my registration costs. Does anything change?
No. The CNPS fee is still part of what you pay the College and appears on your receipt. Your reimbursement claim works exactly as it did before. You do not need to provide anything extra to account for the $0 shown at MyCNPS.
How much is the CNPS fee?
Registered Nurses $68. Licensed Practical Nurses $73. Registered Psychiatric Nurses $93. Nurse Practitioners $159.50. Plus GST.
Nurse practitioners pay the nurse practitioner fee only. Because your RN registration is held automatically alongside your NP registration, you are not charged the RN fee as well.
These amounts are part of your College renewal fee and are shown on the fee schedule.
What payment methods can I use?
Visa and Mastercard. Your registration is not active until payment has been processed.
DURING YOUR RENEWAL
How will the College know I have registered?
After the professional development plan section you reach a page with the declaration questions and a protection step with a verification button. When you select it, Alinity checks with CNPS and confirms your registration immediately.
This is an active step. It does not happen on its own, and you need to complete it before you can go on to payment.
What happens if my protection cannot be confirmed?
Your renewal pauses at the verification step, just before payment, until your registration can be confirmed. You will not lose your progress. Everything else you have completed is saved, and you can come back and finish once it is sorted out.
The two most likely causes are a registration number that does not match the one the College holds, and protection registered under a different designation than the one you are renewing.
Contact the CNPS registration team at 1-800-267-3390 or registration@cnps.ca. They hold the registration record and are the only ones able to correct it. Please do not leave this until close to the December 15 deadline, as a late fee applies after that date.
The College is my host jurisdiction. What do I do?
You complete your quality assurance requirements in your home jurisdiction, and the College recognizes them. This includes virtual care registrants, who hold host licences.
The CNPS amount is part of your College fee, so you register at MyCNPS the same way as any other registrant.
How do I know my renewal is complete?
The final page tells you whether your renewal was approved automatically or sent for review. If it went to review, the registration team will contact you. Once it is complete, your card and certificate for the new year appear in your portal account.
I have already renewed, but I got a reminder email. Did my renewal go through?
Most likely, yes. Reminder emails go to a list prepared in advance, so yours may have crossed with your submission. Sign in to your registrant portal to check. If your renewal shows as complete, you do not need to do anything.
What happens if I miss December 15?
A $100 late fee applies from December 16. Renewals submitted in that window are not guaranteed to be processed before January 1. After January 1, renewal is closed and you would need to apply for reinstatement.

Getting Help
What if I need help?
Your MyCNPS account, your CNPS registration, or CNPS services: contact the CNPS registration team at 1-800-267-3390 or registration@cnps.ca. For legal enquiries, CNPS can be reached at info@cnps.ca.
Your College registration, your renewal, or your Alinity profile: contact us at info@cannn.ca or 867-688-8255.
If I am named or threatened in a legal proceeding, when should I contact CNPS?
CNPS beneficiaries are expected to report involvement in a legal proceeding, or a report or complaint made to their nursing regulator, to CNPS immediately after being notified and before taking any other action. This allows CNPS to protect your interests and respond within timelines that may be short.
